Yaay - Mom
To close this portrait of YAAY, I wanted to return to a childhood memory, to an image that has stayed with me over the years. Since I was little, my siblings and I would often accompany my mother to the phone booth so she could speak with her family in Senegal. I remember those long moments of waiting in the room while she shared conversations with her loved ones. These moments became part of my childhood. With her family living far away, these calls were a way of maintaining a connection with them. They were a way for my mother to stay close to her family, her language, and the bonds that continue to exist despite distance. Throughout the film, we hear a single phone conversation in Wolof with her family while we follow her through her everyday gestures. This call never truly disappears. It runs through each image, transforming ordinary moments into an inhabited space. This film explores this invisible presence. The phone becomes more than an object. It becomes a bridge between two homes.
